SO WHO ARE WE (AMERICANS)
© Robby Bowling

Sometimes you awaken from a slumber
Saying was this real or just a dream
And just at the moment you felt a calming
You could hear the world start to scream

Remembering when days were better
When we could see the path ahead
Immersed in flight the sparrows singing
And it was time to make our beds

So we set our sails for distant shorelines
Sometimes life’s journey’s are the quest
We held our hands & prayed for the knowledge
That would guide us through this wilderness

There was a time when we were humble
And we made amends for our mistakes
We understood that there would be moments
Where we rise or fall & find our place
———————————
CHORUS
So who are we, I guess I’ll remind you
So who are we, just patrons at the dance
So who are we all lying to
If we never learned the dance
So who are we, pawns or kings
Were we really anything at all
So who were we in this charade
It seems most are playing to a desolate hall
——————————-
With every path, we found trails of wisdom
And the Revelations would give us pause
We found doors to hidden chambers
So what is life without a cause

Once upon a time there was imagination
Perhaps intertwined with our every dream
It took our breath to realize our treasure
Was the wishing well by the stream

So we set the stage in this land of plenty
Where we reap exactly what we sow
I can only ask, what’s in the seedlings
And what is this that I now see grow

Why are the waters always stirring
Who sets these fires, where does this end
Wasn’t there once a small family
Who sailed together into the wind
———————————
CHORUS
So who are we, I guess I’ll remind you
So who are we, just patrons at the dance
So who are we all lying to
If we never learned the dance
So who are we, pawns or kings
Were we really anything at all
So who were we in this charade
It seems most are playing to a desolate hall
——————————-
Who is the fool who doesn’t question
Ignorance should not be an easy choice
The price we paid was with our freedoms
Once upon a time we had a voice

And then I ask, who are these oppressors
Who says we can’t question our own fate
They’ve now tried to define what love is
Their definition is what I call hate

I take a breath at God’s pleasure
I take my hands to this mound of clay
I can make of it whatever I dream or wish
It’s the measure of my day

Beneath life’s scars, there are stories
Some were secrets & some were clues
There are the things where we glean wisdom
It takes more than a fool to always play to lose
———————————
CHORUS
So who are we, I guess I’ll remind you
So who are we, just patrons at the dance
So who are we all lying to
If we never learned the dance
So who are we, pawns or kings
Were we really anything at all
So who were we in this charade
It seems most are playing to a desolate hall
——————————-
Indignation is all but second nature
And self-righteousness is now the norm
It seems now the soul is now so shallow
So who prepares us for the storms

So what is strength & what is weakness
Sometimes I think we have them confused
Weakness is now a long parade
You get your pills from the nightly news

Have we forgotten what defines us
Aren’t we unique & set apart
And the difference should be a celebration
So what is truth, what is heart

We now have men selling empty promises
But they are seeds of emptiness
Does dirty water cleanse the soul
Can you truly buy a thing called happiness
———————————
CHORUS
So who are we, I guess I’ll remind you
So who are we, just patrons at the dance
So who are we all lying to
If we never learned the dance
So who are we, pawns or kings
Were we really anything at all
So who were we in this charade
It seems most are playing to a desolate hall
——————————-
There are those who lead & those who follow
And this ticket will take us where
This is not Eden nor the Promised Land
Is this Hell something we wish to share

We take for granted & we shouldn’t
We seem to deny what we see
No one ever said it was going to be easy
It does take a bit of faith to believe

We came into this world empty-handed
As we exit much will be the same
All these material things that allure us
Will not be with us in the grave

The task is simple, it’s an awakening
Most these days sleep till its end
The time between is all telling
Today most seem to dwell on their sins
———————————
CHORUS
So who are we, I guess I’ll remind you
So who are we, just patrons at the dance
So who are we all lying to
If we never learned the dance
So who are we, pawns or kings
Were we really anything at all
So who were we in this charade
It seems most are playing to a desolate hall
——————————-
While I’ll admit words can be confusing
But remember magicians can trick your eyes
But I don’t think you’ll be buying postcards
Some will know they’re all lies

Some ministers claim they know heaven
Politicians claim they know it all
Some people know there are answers
But will you know them when they call

I can’t speak for the weatherman
I don’t see writing on a wall
Some days it rains on our parade
Sometimes we slip & fall

When your time on earth is over
Like others, you’ll look back & reminisce
Will there still be a distant calling
From those you really miss
———————————
CHORUS
So who are we, I guess I’ll remind you
So who are we, just patrons at the dance
So who are we all lying to
If we never learned the dance
So who are we, pawns or kings
Were we really anything at all
So who were we in this charade
It seems most are playing to a desolate hall
